09.07.18PALMETTO RECORDS NEW RELEASE- Testament Guitarist ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO album ‘CONUNDRUM’

Palmetto Records releases TESTAMENT Guitarist's ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO Album 'Conundrum'

If you've attempted to keep up with the news cycle in recent years, then Conundrum, the title of the Alex Skolnick Trio's new album from Palmetto Records/MRI, should be a no-brainer. "It represents the sense of confusion many of us are feeling in the midst of the strangest sociopolitical upheavals of our lifetimes, " says Skolnick, the guitarist and composer who helped define thrash metal as a founding member of Testament, before establishing himself on the international jazz scene. "This album captures many styles in an effort to channel that angst into art and inspire others to do likewise."

Ironically, given its globally pertinent message, Conundrum is in many ways Skolnick's most intimate record yet. It is the trio's first new studio album since 2011's Veritas, and it features original music almost exclusively, with six compositions by Skolnick, one apiece by bassist Nathan Peck and drummer Matt Zebroski, and a gorgeous interpretation of maverick composer Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 1."

Far removed from the musical tunnel vision of "guitar" or "shred" albums, Conundrum reflects Skolnick's wide-ranging knowledge as a player and, even more important, as a listener. "What would I want to hear, regardless of the instrument and regardless of technique?" he asks. "That's the type of music I try to create as an improviser and composer."

The multi-layer, multi-section songs that resulted are, in a word, sweeping— and include plenty for guitar heads to dig into after all. Skolnick's "Unbound, " part of which originated on piano, kicks off Conundrum with springy slapped harmonics. Beautiful chordal work follows, as well as soloing that lays out the guitarist's m.o. as a lead player: to tell a story by varying his attack, tone, intensity and harmonic approach with masterful control. "Django Tango, " which Skolnick originally wrote for his acclaimed world-music project Planetary Coalition, is precisely what it proclaims to be—a sensual commingling of Reinhardt and Piazzolla (plus, Skolnick notes, a touch of downtown attitude via Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos).

The record's title track feels open and airy, with inspiration culled from Chick Corea's Spanish-influenced acoustic tunes. (The melodies are so whimsical that you might not notice the section in 5/4, or that the solos' order upends jazz tradition.) Peck steps away from his double bass, proving a nimble presence on the electric bass here and on a couple of other tunes. A lover of classical piano, Skolnick plays Satie's melancholy reverie on steel-string acoustic, atop Peck and Zebroski's suitably graceful, empathetic backing.

"Culture Shock, " on which Skolnick alternates between hollowbody and Telecaster, is a go-for-broke mashup that flies from Nashville to Dubai and back again; it's also one of the album's tunes where the title puts Skolnick's social and political ideas in plain sight.

Zebroski's "Dodge the Bamboula" borrows its changes from "Dodge the Dodo, " by the late Swedish pianist-composer Esbjörn Svensson, and applies them to the much-overlooked bamboula rhythm that became a cornerstone of New Orleans' second-line groove. During a middle section, Skolnick picks up a Gypsy-jazz guitar and we're transported to a café in '30s-era Paris. Skolnick's "Key of Sea, " crafted toward the end of the album's writing session, takes its cinematic textures from the ambient-music innovator Brian Eno and from ECM Records. (Like so many jazz devotees, Skolnick was ecstatic when ECM began streaming its entire catalog last fall; "Key of Sea" was particularly influenced by one of the label's curated playlists, "ECM Atmospheres.") "I think I realized not every tune needs a super-singable melody, " Skolnick comments. The album's last two tunes find the trio more firmly on jazz terrain: "A Question of Moral Ambiguity" is a hip midtempo swinger that allows Skolnick and company to get their blues fix; and "Protect the Dream" (not to be confused with the Grover Washington Jr. tune of the same name) finds Peck, its composer, digging deep into post-Wayne Shorter harmony. Skolnick spends most of the track on steel-string acoustic, but goes full electric tilt to close, per Peck's request.

Born in 1968 and raised in the Bay Area, Alex Skolnick was still a teenager when he made heavy-metal history on Testament's essential debut, The Legacy. Over his next five years with the band, he cemented his reputation as one of metal's most gifted lead guitarists, setting chops benchmarks with his work on songs like "Burnt Offerings" and "Practice What You Preach." He left Testament in 1992 and rejoined in 2005, and following his return the band has released three well-received studio albums and remained a major touring act in heavy music. Most recently Testament has been hitting arenas and amphitheaters as part of Slayer's blockbuster "Final World Tour." In 1995, after nearly getting the guitar spot in Ozzy Osbourne's band — the Prince of Darkness seemed thrilled; his wife/manager Sharon, less so — Skolnick found himself at a crossroads. "The ultimate guitar gig, and then for it not to happen, that was really motivating for me. I really asked myself, 'What am I going to do?' Especially in the mid-'90s, when the guitar solo was disappearing from rock. And what do I want to do?"

His interest in jazz had been gathering steam since before he left Testament, so Skolnick headed east toward the end of the decade and enrolled at Manhattan's venerable New School. It was there that he dug even deeper into recordings by Miles, Trane, Wes, Jim Hall, Scofield, Metheny and more; studied with jazz greats like saxophonist George Garzone and bassist Reggie Workman; and formed his trio, which debuted on record in 2002 with Goodbye to Romance: Standards for a New Generation.

The album, with its wholly convincing jazz makeovers of hard-rock staples by Kiss, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith and more, made waves that roiled through the jazz, rock and guitar communities. "The strong melodies lend themselves to improvisation in a way that their composers never imagined, " Tad Hendrickson wrote in The Village Voice. And in DownBeat, Glenn Astarita offered, "Besides the musicians' technical prowess, they execute these rock tunes with a slant that might imply an antithesis to what was originally conceived."

Dates at high-profile venues like the Iridium, in Manhattan, Yoshi's, in Oakland, and the Blue Note Milano followed, as did three more critically lauded studio albums. Each of those contained at least one rock-to-postbop transformation, which has become something of a calling card for the trio. "Doing the cover tunes was something I stumbled upon, " Skolnick says. "There have been so many albums and interpretations of jazz standards and the Great American Songbook, but I really felt a connection to these songs."

On Conundrum, however, the opportunity to showcase his inspired original music was too good to pass up. "I'm not saying we'll never do another [rock cover], " Skolnick says, also pointing out that the vinyl version of Conundrum will contain a rendition of Scorpions' classic ballad "Still Loving You." "But I always wanted to expand as a composer. I always wanted my instrumental work to reflect that."

Expansion, progress, the trust that develops within a band—these are concepts Skolnick wades into when discussing the future of the trio, and of his life in music. "With every record we do, every gig, I feel like there's a sense of improvement, " he says. "I feel like I'm playing circles around where we were when I started improvising. Scofield, Metheny, Jeff Beck— my improvising idols—they're always developing."

And while Testament continues to thrive, it’s the trio and its repertoire that Skolnick can see growing old with. “These days I still love playing screaming, loud guitar and heavy metal, though I don’t think I’m going to be one of these guys who’s past social-security age and in a rock band and touring, " he says. “But I can see myself doing these songs with the trio for many years to come."

Alex Skolnick Trio Releases ‘Conundrum’, Featuring Bassist Nathan Peck

Thrash metal guitarist Alex Skolnick has an instrumental jazz trio. What??? That’s correct! Not s typo and in case you have been living under a ‘rock’ or a under a blanket of Rock and have not yet branched out into jazz and other, AST has been around nearly two decades and will soon release their 7th kick-ass album!
Known for twisting and mashing rock and metal anthems into jazz bodies for improvisation, this hard hitting instrumental trio has carved quite a niche for themselves mixing and melding jazz and heavy metal over their 18 year career.

Bassist Nathan Peck has always had a tendency toward really getting inside a lot of different styles and leads his own electric jazz group, the Funky Electrical Unit which gigs regularly at the 55 Bar In NYC.

That kind of versatility is what the bassist of a jazz metal guitarist would need and should need. After relocating to New York City in 2002, Nathan Peck joined the band on recommendation of drummer Matt Zebroski who is also fellow Pittsburgh PA native. The powerhouse duo has played together in various forms since there teens and share a vision of playing that leans toward mastering music regardless of genre lines and categories.
Throughout the band’s career they have become known for putting out rocking jazz versions of rock and heavy metal classics by the likes of Kiss, Ozzie, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and the Scorpions even covering Rush’s Tom Sawyer and Testament’s Practice What You Preach.

So just how did this Jazz/Metal trio come about? Legend has it that Zebroski recognized Alex with short hair in a music theory class at New School University in 1998 the two began jamming and arranging and improvising on metal and rock anthems and injecting their modern jazz vocabulary and approach into it. Essentially they began creating a “new standard" to work in: Taking songs from way outside the Jazz idiom and making them Jazz. In 2002 along with then bassist John Davis, they released their groundbreaking debut Goodbye To Romance: Standards For A New Generation which received critical praise by Down Beat, Jazziz, and The Village Voice.

Peck joined in 2003 and a 2nd album, Transformation was born followed by Last Day In Paradise in 2007 both for Magna-Carta records. Their 4th record, Veritas 2011 (Palmetto) reached No. 7 on the iTunes jazz charts. Their 5th album Unbound was released in 2016 and is a full-length live album featuring live cuts from shows in Europe during their Europe Unbound Tour and is available on vinyl.
The latest album, Conundrum, marks a new era of music for the trio as they delve further into world music and rock than before.

On the track Culture Shock, they seamlessly mix a country 2-beat in G with a raga-rock groove over Gsusb9 and tie it all together with a fantastic Tihai. The title track Conundrum is a fast paced mixed-meter tune with melody doubled by Peck on his Sadowsky NYC 5-24 tuned E-C. Peck’s own original Protect the Dream, a dark but hopeful jazz ballad turned smashing rock makes for the final track on the album. The lone cover might be the most interesting to date – a piece called Gymnopedie No.1 by French composer and pianist Erik Satie. Drummer Matt Zebroski also contributes a piece- an African drum chant inspired song he calls, Dodge the Bambula. Another Skolnick original Question of Moral Ambiguity has the band swinging hard on a bluesy shuffle and you get to hear the jazz roots come alive. The new record certainly stretches the imagination. At one end you a swinging jazz guitar trio and at the other end you have a heavy rock trio pounding out riffs and grooves! Awe inspiring for sure.

Album release parties are scheduled for September 9th at Reggie’s Rock Club in Chicago IL, September 12th and 13th at Iridium in New York City and September 15th at the Baked Potato in Los Angeles, CA.

04.11.18THE FUNKY ELECTRICAL UNIT @55 BAR NYC THURSDAY 4:12:18!

New York City bassist Nathan Peck brings his Funky Electrical Unit to one of New York City's most infamous jazz venues, The 55 Bar Thursday April 12, 2018. Formerly a prohibition era dive bar, this Greenwich Village icon hosts some of the biggest names in jazz and is home to some of the most critically acclaimed in modern electric jazz. If names like Mike Stern, Wayne Krantz, Anthony Jackson, Tim Lefebvre, Tom Kennedy, Felix and Jaco come to mind then you're probably on the right block in the village.
"This is a place where a band can really explore" Nathan Peck says. He further illustrates-
"A place where a band can seamlessly morph from fast walking bass funk be bop to mixed meter funk to modern jazz, and it's all accepted and respected. Here we’re able to play for ourselves and our audience as one, having not to compromise because of musical expectations or style check-points." To his point, no time for purists here, this is a musicians' music venue!
As a sideman, Peck has seen many a night at the 55 but is appearing more often with his own group, The Funky Electrical Unit. Expect to hear Peck's own grease-lined funk/jazz/fusion inspired originals as well as fresh takes of classics that you mike not expect to hear, Pinball Number Count, Little Red Corvette, and Good Pork Pie Hat, to name a few. Peck released his debut album Top Dead Center in 2016 which musically performs a balancing act between TOP style funk, mixed-meter jazz, hip hop, and a slew of groovy nuggets such as Laguna Seca, a new melody and song constructed on the Steely Dan Outtake Kulee Baba. No matter the song or style, there is always a consistent sense of rhythmic direction and assertion. A followup is currently in the works. He further notes "I am honored to perform in the same prohibition era dive bar as many of my personal heroes!!" And with companies like Aguilar, Sadowsky and Daddario backing him, he’s got a lot to give.

03.01.17Nathan Peck with Alex Skolnick Trio Europe Unbound 2017

From rock to jazz, Alex Skolnick has made a name for himself as someone who has successfully done the seemingly impossible… rise to fame as one of the world’s premier heavy metal guitarists and then become a jazz musician!

Bassist Nathan Peck has been in the trio since 2003 and is on 4 out of the 5 jazz trio records, which have traditionally focused on creating jazz renditions of heavy metal music. It may sound strange but it’s entirely cohesive. As Nathan puts it, “We are very picky about the songs we cover. There has to be a recognizable melody and some harmonic content to work with. We like to re-harmonize as well so there has to be some substance. One example is our arrangement of ‘Still Lovin You’ by the Scorpions. That melody is recognizable on any instrument!"

A noticeable characteristic of this band is the sheer dynamic volume. This creates many challenges for Mr. Peck who plays acoustic bass in the band. Nathan adds, “If I were to play bass guitar in this trio, things would be easier but so much less jazzy and more like fusion. The upright sort of brings it all into focus. We swing too so it’s gotta be upright!" The challenge comes in getting the upright to match the dynamic range of the guitar and drums, without feeding back. For this feat, he uses very specific gear – the Czech-Ease Acoustic Road Bass by David Gage is his bass of choice as well as Aguilar amps, cabs and pedals and a Fishman Platinum Pro EQ, which all work together helping Nathan blaze through some pretty complicated passages.

Peck’s playing can be heard on the trio’s albums ‘Transformation’ (Magna-Carta 2004) ‘Last Day In Paradise’ (Magna-Carta 2007) ‘Veritas’ (Palmetto 2011) and the latest ‘AST Live Unbound’ (Skol Productions 2017), which was recorded live at Spin Music in New York City. The new album is also available in vinyl format, features two new compositions (Unbound, Culture Shock) as well as five live versions of previously recorded songs.

Nathan Peck has also released his debut solo album ‘Top Dead Center’ and can be seen gigging around NYC with his group, The Funky Electrical Unit.

A televised performance of the MILES DAVIS ELECTRIC BAND in the late '90s led guitarist Alex Skolnick to New York City, where he immersed himself in the jazz world. For the past decade, Skonick has led a double life as a member of TESTAMENT, the seminal thrash metal band he joined at the age of 16. In the summer of 2016, he's both toured Europe with TESTAMENT and performed with Miles's keyboardist, Alan Holzman.

Due on September 16 via Skol Productions, "Live Unbound" marks the first live album from the ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO (AST), featuring Skolnick alongside his longtime bandmates, Nathan Peck on bass and drummer Matt Zebroski.

Recorded live in December 2014 for a gathering of friends at Spin Studios in New York City, "Live Unbound" pairs five of Alex's compositions with reimagined versions of "Dream On" (AEROSMITH) and "Still Loving You" (SCORPIONS). The latter two are from Musiktheater Piano in Dortmund, Germany, during AST's European tour in 2016.

"This recording says that we don't have much use for limitations," says Skolnick. "Our live performances can take us anywhere, from the spirit of quintessential jazz guitar trios to distortion and chaos. It's all possible."

07.02.15NATHAN PECK RELEASES DEBUT SINGLE "NYC HOTBED"

From jazz to rock to hip hop, bassist Nathan Peck has been deeply planted in the New York City music scene and has performed with a wide array of players from the likes of Alex Skolnick and Vernon Reed to Ari Hoenig and Donny McCasslin. He's also a regular in the Nickel & Dime Ops crew, Shahin Novrasli Trio and has been seen backing up Bonnie Tyler, Mark Murphy, Maynard Ferguson and Sting in his 24 year career.
Nathan is now focusing on his own music more than ever with his debut release, "NYC Hotbed" which will be available 7/2/2015 via high quality digital download.

"Being a recording artist has helped me to develop an entirely customized set of skills and patience" Nathan says of his recording endeavors.
"When it's your own music, some things seem hyper crucial and later on not so much. In the end, you hope you have your masterpiece as you envisioned it. You hope you didn't forget anything you wanted to do, because after all, once it's out there, it's for real!"

Nathan further comments on his new release:
"This is a hard hitting jammi jam of funk, rock and hip hop rolled into some heavy butter sauce and tossed into an iron skillet full of hot grease from the streets! This track also represents the joys and struggles that artists and musicians encounter making a life in the big apple."

NYC Hotbed is now available at Nathan's bandcamp page
$2.00 gets you a high quality audio file!
